The race would start and Ted would quickly move up to 2nd. Then he would slide back a bit to the 4th position as Caution #1 comes out for debris on the track.
Restart on lap 11 and Ted would once again slip back a few spots as Mark Martin passes him on the way to the front. Caution #2 flies on lap 17 as #77 Brendan Gaughan looses a drive shaft. Everyone would pit and Ted would come out of the pits in 12th.
The race would restart on lap 22 and on that lap the #1 would spin right in front of Ted and bring out Caution #3. Good break for Todd Bodine as he was penalized for jumping the restart. He would come in and get a splash of fuel and restart in the back. Ted would restart 9th.
After the restart Ted would slowly climb back up through the field. With 68 laps to go he would be 8th. Six laps later he would gain another spot and be 7th. Meanwhile Todd is himself charging back up through the field.
Caution #4 would come out as the #98 Erin Crocker spins. Most would pit but Ted stays out and would restart in 5th place. Just five laps later and Caution #5 would come out as #25 Boston Reid and #07 Eric Norris would get together. Ted still stays out.
Caution #6 on the night is for #02 Kelly Sutton spinning on the track. Most would pit for the last time including Ted. With 38 laps to go Ted would restart in 17th. The adjustments in the pits helped and Ted would charge to the front. With 30 laps to go Ted is now up to 11th.
Caution #7 come out for debris on the track again. The race would restart with 25 laps to go with Ted now in 5th. As the race winds down both Ted and Todd are closing in on the leader Mark Martin. With 10 laps to go Todd passes Mark for the lead. With 7 laps to go Ted makes it to 3rd!
Caution #8 comes out with 2 laps to go as #59 Mike Wallace spins. Another green-white-checkered finish! Ted and Todd would give Mark a run for his money but in the end it would be the same result as Daytona ....1st-Mark....2nd-Todd....3rd-Ted.
Looks like the Germain boys are having some fun! Ted once again has a strong run at California. After the race Ted would say that he used up his right rear tire charging to the front. It was a great job by Ted and his crew!
On to Atlanta for the 3rd race of the year.
