MIlwaukee 200
The Milwaukee Mile
Milwaukee, Wisconsin
June 20, 2008
- Quote from Ted about The Milwaukee Mile:
“Racing here is unique. It is the oldest racetrack in the US. Look at all of the winners here – Indy cars, USAC Stock cars, ASA and now NASCAR. If you look at the Indy 500 winners and then look at the Milwaukee winners you will see a lot of them coincide. I used to come here and watch my dad race from the infield. There wasn’t much I could do other than eat potato chips and drink a Coke while he was racing though. It was really unique to go there and race for the first time.”
- Quote from Ted about the importance of "The Elmer Musgrave Memorial" race.
“It is very important. It’s something my mom put together after my dad passed away. She got together with the promoters at Illiana and they started the Elmer Musgrave Memorial race. It is big for all of us because our entire family gets together there. For me it is important because my dad was so instrumental to getting my racing career started.”
- Race day.
- There was a chance of rain all day but it would hold off for most of the day.
- First practice would come and Ted would run 6th quick right off the trailer.
- The crew would then work on a tight condition during the rest of the 1st practice session.
- They would make it a little better but still had a ways to go to get the truck to turn.
- For final practice the team would make a major change to combat the tight truck.
- The truck although getting better, still would not turn in the center.
- Ted says that the whole left side of the truck is lifting up in the turns.
- They would come in and out of the pits over 10 times and never really got it.
- Ted ended up 27th quick in the final practice.
- He was on the same tires for both practices and some trucks made mock qualifying runs.
- Ted would go off 1st for qualifying and end up 20th.
- Green Flag!
- Racing was side by side all the way back for the first couple of laps.
- By lap 3 Ted would be 19th.
- Caution #1 would come on lap 7 for a spin that was right in front of Ted.
- Restart on lap 11 and Ted is now 17th.
- There would again be some tough side by side racing in front of Ted.
- Five laps after the restart Ted would be 15th.
- Ted now reports that the truck is tight and when behind other trucks it was real tight.
- Dispite the tight condition Ted is holding his own on the track.
- Lap 35 and Ted is now 16th.
- Lap 44 and Ted is now 17th.
- Lap 51 and Ted says the truck will not turn at all and is now 18th.
- Lap 61 we start to see lightning off in the distance and Ted is now 19th.
- Lap 63 and Ted now goes a lap down to the leader #23 Benson and is 20th.
- Lap 71 of 200 and Ted pits for 4 tires/fuel/adjustments under green flag conditions.
- Caution #2 on lap 77 as the #40 truck stops on the track and Ted is 24th.
- Ted would pit again to top off on fuel and get an adjustment.
- The crew thought it was a quickie caution but it wasn't and Ted gets sent to the back.
- This I think is when the scoreboard goes out for the rest of the race.
- So all laps and positions are as close as I can be from here to the end.
- Restart on lap 80 and Ted is way back lets say.
- Ted would move up and pass 4 trucks in the first few laps.
- Then when passing the #09 they touch but with no damage.
- Caution #3 would come on lap 90.
- Ted pits during a "real" quickie caution for 4 tires/fuel/adjustments.
- Restart on lap 98 and Ted is 24th.
- Caution #4 would come for a spin in front of Ted and he would get hit hard.
- #2 Sprague gets spun and never lets up on the gas and hit Ted in the right front.
- This was a big wreck and Ted would pit 3 times to fix the damage and straighten the tow.
- Restart on lap 104 and Ted is now 29th.
- Ted is actually going pretty fast right now.
- He is now passing at least on truck each lap.
- However after 10 laps the truck would tighten up but Ted is still passing trucks.
- Lap 122 and Ted says it is getting tighter by the lap and he is 20th.
- Lap 128 and Ted reports the steering feels weird.
- Caution #5 for weather.
- Ted pits for 4 tires/fuel/adjustments under the yellow.
- Because of the damage Ted can not turn right and has to back up to get around the truck ahead of him in the pits.
- Red Flag!
- Ted says why the red flag? Are they waiting for the rain?
- Then we hear that ALL fans are to leave the stands because of lightning.
- We can hear on MRN that Ted is 23rd and 2 laps down.
- After most of the fans left, the track announcer calls us back to the stands.
- Ted would pit before they go green with 47 to go for repairs.
- After a few laps Caution #6 comes for a spin once again on front of Ted.
- Ted pits once again for repairs.
- Ted once again gets sent to the back for pitting too soon.
- Ted reports, as he has all race, that he is really really tight.
- He would pass trucks early in the run but would slow down after 10 laps.
- 10 to go and Ted is 20th.
- 7 to go and Ted gets lapped again.
- 4 to go and Ted is battling hard with the #03 Wallace.
- The race ends and Ted edges Chrissy Wallace by a nose for 19th.
- The team was not able to fix the tight condition.
- Then Ted gets caught up in a wreck and there would be no chance at a good finish.
- On to Memphis and hopefully on to a much better finish.
