The third IROC race of four was once again in Daytona. This time on the road course. This race would incorporate both the high speed banks of the main track and the tight turns of the infield. Ted said of this race...“The IROC Race at Daytona is going to be two different things for me, one, it’s a nighttime race on a road course, which I have never done, and second, running the road course at Daytona which is another thing I have never done in my racing career. I missed out on the 24 Hour Daytona race when I joined Roush Racing. I was supposed to do a 24 hour Daytona Race with Mark Martin but Jack decided not to. It's going to be cool to run the Daytona road course under the lights.” Ted would start 1st for this race based on reverse driver points. On the start Max Pappis passes Ted on the first turn for the lead. Ted keeps up to Max during the first lap. Each lap is over 3.5 miles! By lap 2 Ted has fallen back to 5th. After 3 laps he was 6th. There he stayed for the next few laps only 6-7 seconds back from the leader. Then Ted pits early. Something was wrong with the rear brake caliper. Ted comes out of the pits just 37 seconds back. If all was fixed then Ted would catch up when the mandatory caution flag comes with 8 to go. It was not to be as the brake problem proved to be the end of Ted's day. The race would resume with me not caring what happened there after. Ted finished 12th. Ted got 3 points for his efforts. Ted is now -49 points back of the points leader. He now just races to win as the points title is out of reach. Tony Stewart wins. |
